Hello Summer Buddies!
Looking out the window this morning it seems like summer is miles away (it's rainy in case you're reading this in June). But opening day is just around the corner. As always, we will open for the summer on Memorial Day Weekend rain or shine. The pool is full and the heater she is a-runnin. You can see the opening weekend hours here.
To make sure you fully get into the swing of things, we will be holding a Memorial Day BBQ starting at 4pm. Burgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, kids drinks and some adult drinks will be provided by the board. You should bring your own side dishes, because its important to eat healthy and get some fiber. Plus, you'll probably have to feed some random kid who's mom is not paying attention. So be ready for that.
It's going to be a great year and we are excited for everything we have in store! We've made some upgrades to the locker rooms and have even installed a new drinking fountain. (The old one was an embarrassment). Remember if you have any suggestions or ideas as to how we can make our club better, don't hesitate to drop us a note here.
Our club is operated and fueled by the energy of volunteerism. Add your muscle to the mix by helping with the spring clean up effort. Your help in getting the pool ready for the season will make a huge difference.
The 2019 cleanup will take place this Saturday morning (the 27th). Please come by and donate an hour of your time or bring your teenage kids who do no work at your place and make them work at AK! Everything helps.
Clean-up begins at 0900. Donuts and coffee will be provided but probably will go fast.
Join the AK tennis team and enjoy a high-energy competitive program with matches against other local tennis clubs.
Just like swim team, tennis team practices throughout the week in preparation for weekend matches against other tennis programs. Just like swim team, we always win and our coaches are signing autographs at the end of each event. Our program is affiliated with the USTA Junior Tennis Programs. We compete with other local summer club programs and work toward summer tournaments throughout the year.
Both AK members and non-members are eligible to join the tennis team. We have spots open but the deadline to register is April 25th. Contact Rick ASAP!
Both Condé Nast and Sunset Magazine have selected Applewood Knolls as the Best Summer Club in America 5 years running*. A key part of our success is the fun and laid-back atmosphere we have cultivated at our little family hide-a-way. While it's an easy place to enjoy, it's not an easy place to operate. We have a small army of volunteers and board members that keep this place buzzing. One of the most critical roles at AK is our treasurer.
Currently, our books are professionally and meticulously managed by the brainiac Jennifer Jeffrey. Jennifer keeps the bills paid, the guards compensated and the P in P&L (that's both a pool joke and an accounting joke. 3 points for me).
To assist Jennifer in her excellence, we are looking for an existing pool member with some financial management experience and a desire to give back to the club. That experience could include running a fortune 500 company, being an accountant for a small North Denver mob family or even counting the change in your ashtray.
If you're interested, please email us a hair sample, a hi-res photo of your big toe to this address and we will get back to you!
* This is not true. We have never been featured in either magazine. But we did find an old Tiger Beat in the boiler room once. Have a nice day.
With a whole bunch of Red Bull and Skittles, we managed to get everything running.
Returning members should have received an email today regarding registration. If you did not, please drop me a note here. I'll get back to you as soon as I can, but definitely not within 24 hours. Deep breaths.
Waitlisters will get a nice note regarding their situation in the next few days telling them to be patient.
Our revised communications schedule is as follows:
We are having some technical difficulties delivering the 2019 Summer Registrations and have therefor missed our February 1 schedule. Our hope is to have everything resolved shortly and they should be sent today - Feb 2. Sorry for the confusion.
Seems like I'm always posting about the summer when the weather is at its worst. Believe it or not, 2019 Membership Registration is just around the corner.
Here is how it's gonna go down.
Feel free to drop us a note if you have any questions! Unless the question is about where you are on the waitlist. Your position will be in your waitlist reminder.
As a tidbit of detail in that regard,...remember we offer a maximum of 250 memberships every summer. We currently have 932 people on the waitlist. Yes. That's a cold, gray bucket of suck.
What Happens in the Winter?
Board of Directors Election
First thing we do after the season ends is hold elections for the Applewood Knolls Swim and Tennis Club Board of Directors..
After two great years as AK President, Steve Copher has stepped down. A tremendous thanks to Steve, Mike Zarlengo and everyone who operated the club in 2018. This is not an easy job and the pay is basically pain and suffering. They did an amazing job improving the club operations and the facility.
To carry the club into the next season, we have new board officers. Those lucky folks are listed below:
Our board is made up of up to 12 individuals who have interest and passion for our fun little club. We are always looking for individuals who will be members of the club for a while and want to see it remain the fun place it is today. OR better than it is today. Depends on your point of view!
Being a board member is a very fulfilling opportunity to make a difference in your family's summer fun as well as give back to the community. The time commitment is limited and actually very limited during the summer once the pool gets rolling.
If you are interested in hearing more about how you can contribute to the club as an AK Board member, please contact our new club president, Rick Assmus, to learn more.
Due to lousy weather, rain and coldness we are postponing the End of Summer Rum Party.
Keep an eye on this website and the police blotter to hear when we reschedule.
Sorry if this ruins your plans for the evening. I'm sure there is rum in your house somewhere. You'll survive.
